Eliza

I’ve been silent lately for a few reasons, the biggest of which is because my boyfriend and I are fostering a 2 year-old pit mix, Eliza, and it’s been all-consuming.  She was found abandoned on Delaware Ave and brought to Parkside Vet Hospital by a kind soul (thank you, whoever you are!)  She arrived emaciated with a skin condition and was so stressed out that she was having seizures.  Eliza was obviously bred and tossed once she had given birth, probably way too soon for her pups.  It’s mind-boggling to me that someone could treat her so poorly, because she is a truly great dog.  Needless to say, a pit with epilepsy was on the fast track to being put down and a friend of ours who works at Parkside stepped in and said, “This is too good a dog.  She deserves a second chance.”  We brought her home not knowing anything about her history.  Would she be housetrained?  Food aggressive?  Good with other dogs?  (Yes, no, yes.)  As the days click by it’s amazing to see how she is starting to thrive.  Her skin has cleared up, she’s gained weight and is learning simple commands.  Despite being skittish around loud cars and motorcycles she loves to take walks because it means potential interaction with other dogs and humans, who she can’t get enough of.  This dog is pure love: she will curl up on my lap like a little baby (albeit a very muscular baby who is under the impression that she’s a lap dog.)  Our goal is to provide Eliza with a stable home full of affection until she is healed, spayed and adopted.  It’s going to be devastating to see her go, but I know she’ll be happier with a yard where she can frolic, and we’re doing our best to make her feel safe and loved during the time we have together.  Every time she sighs happily as she goes to sleep I know we are succeeding.
