“Is this going to be like a Gwar show?”

- Jackers, re: the potential for flying liquids after we were shuffled by someone official from the very last row to the reserved seats up front.

This evening Jackers and I had dinner and a few rounds at Sutter’s then hopped across the street to SUNY for Dan Savage’s veeeeery entertaining (educational) lecture, which was the keynote of the university’s Sexuality Week.  There were a lot of highlights, of course.  Savage’s straightforward, backhanded advice is always easy to swallow (sorry) but somehow in person his insights seem even more endearing and logical.  Audience members were invited to submit questions ahead of time on notecards or be brave and raise a hand, and plenty did.  Savage responded on topics like effectively pushing equal rights policies (“Most opponents of gay marriage just want the issue to go away.  No problem.  Give us what we want and we’ll shut up.  And we won’t invite you to our weddings.”) when he lost his virginity (“15.  How many people lost their virginity at 15? 14?…….10?) and whether or not vaginas actually get loose over time (“Sure they do.  Turn over.”)  This is all paraphrased, of course, for maximum snarkiness but that’s kind of the point: education through honesty and mockery.  Tonight we laughed a lot along with everyone else and throughout the lecture I saw people smiling to their friends, nodding their heads adamantly in agreement with Savage’s points, feeling accepted (not just tolerated.)  I guess that’s kind of the point.
